Back to Basics: Mom’s Apple Crisp

Eat it. The fork told you to. And you know you want to.

I think I might have shocked a few of you with yesterday’s post. So today we’re heading back to basics with an easy dessert to prepare for the family. Every good Canadian probably has a recipe for apple crisp stored somewhere at the bottom of their recipe box, and its one my family always comes back to.

Mom’s recipe is classic- just 6 ingredients: apples, flour, oats, brown sugar, cinnamon, and butter. All wholesome, melt-in-your-mouth ingredients.

Its simple enough for beginners, but beautiful enough to serve for a crowd. Its one-dish-delicious. Its one of those recipes that you can make over and over again, and it never gets old.

Make it early in the day, cook it, refrigerate, and heat up just before serving. Or just have it cold. I honestly couldn’t tell you which is better. Because I secretly ate it for breakfast the next morning.


With or without ice cream, its a soft and crunchy miracle.

Mom’s Apple Crisp

Serves: 6-8
A classic apple crisp that’s easy to make ahead for a crowd
  • 6 medium sized apples
  • 3/4 cup packed brown sugar
  • 3/4 cup all purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup quick oats
  • 1/2 cup + 1 TB butter, softened
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  1. Peel, core, and slice apples. Lay out the apples in a large casserole dish.
  2. Preheat oven to 375. In a medium mixing bowl, combine brown sugar, flour, oats, butter, and cinnamon. Mix with your hands. Sprinkle mixture evenly over the apples.
  3. Bake for 30-45 minutes uncovered, or until apples are soft.
  4. Remove from oven and let stand for 10-15 minutes before serving. Alternatively, place crisp in the fridge to serve later in the day. Serve cold, or reheat in the oven at 375 F, covered, for 20 minutes.

So go on, lick the bowl…

  1. love this recipe!!!
    we will be camping next weekend and i was wondering if i could cook this and freeze it to take with us.?
    it would thaw in the cooler and heat it over the fire!

    1. Oh gosh that sounds super awesome! Campfire food is the best! I’m honestly not sure how freezing would work because I’ve never tried freezing it, but I have left it in the fridge for a week before (leftovers) and it still tasted awesome. So that might be another option, if you were going to eat it on the first or second day of your camping trip. The other thing you could do is make the recipe, but instead of putting it in a casserole dish, wrap everything in foil and then heat it up on the fire, when it has died down a little bit. We call them “foil dinners”. I’m excited for you and let me know what you try and if it works! 🙂

  4. I use the same ingredients but put more oatmeal than flour (so I would put 1 cup instead of 1/2). I also started adding strawberries with the apples and I have also tried peaches instead of apples and it tastes soooo good!

    1. Hi Nancy, those all sound like great ideas. One day I’m going to try the crisp with strawberries as well, and peaches too! After a few unlucky incidents with a peach crisp (we’re talking almost oven fire) I left peaches alone for a while but maybe it’s time to try them out again 🙂

  8. I love this recipe! It is the best one I’ve tried to date. I’ve found I like it best when the topping is doubled and a generous amount of vanilla is added. I also 1/2 cup oil and only 1/4 cup butter when doubling the recipe. Also I coat the apples in cinnamon before adding the topping as well as adding cinnamonin the topping. Thanks for sharing, Lisa
